Customer Behaviour

What local customers decide in the first five seconds

Local service customers move fast and compare in tabs. The first five seconds decide whether you stay in the running or get closed.

4 min read

A local customer with a problem rarely reads a website. They scan it, on a phone, with two or three competitors open at once. In the first few seconds they are making a series of fast, mostly unconscious judgements.

The questions behind the scan

  • Do these people do the specific thing I need?
  • Do they cover my area?
  • Can they help in my timeframe?
  • Do they seem trustworthy and established?
  • How do I contact them, and is it easy right now?

If the answers are not obvious almost immediately, the visitor does not dig. They close the tab and give their attention to whichever competitor made the answers effortless.

Designing for the scan, not the read

This is why a clear headline that names the customer and the service beats a clever tagline. It is why the service area and contact method should be visible without scrolling. It is why trust signals belong near the top, not buried on an about page.

You are not competing on how good you are. You are competing on how quickly a stranger can tell.
